Participation in School Sponsored Extracurricular Activities
Students are encouraged to seek extracurricular activities that allow them to expand their knowledge and skills, have fun, and make new friends. However, St. Brigid School places a high priority on academics and proper conduct. A student’s participation in extracurricular activities will be contingent upon the following terms:
• no accumulative average grade of D or F in any subject (consideration is given to students who are working to their abilities as determined by teachers and principal)
• no expulsions or in-school or out-of-school suspensions
Teachers will be given the names of students who are in extra-curricular activities. Each week, teachers will send to the office the names of those students who have an accumulative average of D or F or have failed to complete the required work for the week. Before the coaches or adults in charge are notified, the teachers will be consulted to determine if the students are working to their abilities. The adult responsible for the activity will then be notified of ineligibility of students for a one-week period beginning that Monday. If the students improve sufficiently, they may be reinstated the following week.
Parents play an essential part in helping their children place the proper emphasis on the importance of sports, band, strings, choir, etc. Participation in extracurricular activities can be an excellent way for children to learn many important social skills such as teamwork and cooperation. However, when games or practices are considered more important than attendance at church or school functions, we are sending the children very confusing messages. We count on you to help them make mature decisions.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES CURRENTLY OFFERED AT ST. BRIGID SCHOOL:
The Irish Happy Feet Run/Walk Fitness Club
The newest addition to the extracurricular activities available to St. Brigid students is a run/walk fitness club. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade along with parent and staff volunteers join together twice a week to exercise, and the students are asked to run/walk at least once on their own over the weekends. The program is a no pressure program geared toward students of all fitness levels. Each student is asked to set their own personal exercise goal. The goal for many students is to complete the St. Brigid 5K held during the weekend of the St. Brigid Festival. Adult mentors encourage and train with the students.
“The students really motivate each other,” said Kristy Harner, parent and organizer of the group. “The program is a wonderful way to get children and families active and build a love of exercise for a lifetime. The children get outside and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment. The health benefits are priceless!”
The group meets for one hour after school and the time spent running gradually increases. There are some running games that help the students enjoy running. Students also discuss nutrition and the particular nutrition needs of athletes. The number of students involved is continuing to grow.

Sports
There are opportunities at St. Brigid to play basketball (boys and girls), volleyball (boys and girls), and golf (boys and girls). All coaches are volunteers and have attended the Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Decree on Child Protection training program and have been fingerprinted.
Basketball
Students may participate in basketball from the 4th through the 8th grade. Both boys' and girls' teams are formed for each grade level unless there are not enough players in one grade. In such case, grades may be combined to form a team. Currently, St. Brigid teams participate in the CYO league for Dayton area teams.Volleyball
Volleyball is available for girls in grades 4 through 8. In some years grades are combined because of a shortage of enough girls to field a team in every grade. Boys' volleyball is available through the CYO league and for the first time, a boys 7th and 8th grade volleyball team was established in 2009 and continued in 2010.Golf
Golf at St. Brigid is available to students in grades 5-8 and is open to girls and boys. Students are coached by a St. Brigid parishioner. Golf occurs in the fall only.
